I know the name sounds weird but Cranberries in a khichdi/porridge is one fusion that emerged really well. The mild sweetness and sourness of cranberries got enhanced beautifully with the whole moong dal and brown rice. Yes, I made the khichdi/porridge with brown rice and whole moong lentil to increase the nutritional quotient of the dish. This dish is a perfect balance of proteins, carbohydrates and fats (of course, with very less amount of ghee). Usually, khichdi/porridge is considered as comfort food and here I am with a perfect khichdi recipe with a unique twist.

Generally, it is considered that something spicy and sour goes well with a sweetened dish. Here, with this khichdi, we have a mildly spicy and sour chutney perfectly complementing it. This chutney is healthy and all-organic with lots of goodness. I can call this delicacy as a childhood memory. I clearly remember how I used to get the wood apples from the market, from a vendor who used to get it from the jungle. That scrumptious aroma of a ripe wood apple is simply intoxicating. The delicious soft pulp in that hard cell is like a treasure of flavours.

Anyway, let us get into the nutritional factors of the key ingredients of the dish.

CRANBERRIES- Apart from being super delicious, It helps in fighting age-related damage. It helps in improving heart health. Cranberries help in treating or preventing urinary tract infection. Cranberries Preventing infections. It Support post-menopausal health too and many more.

WHOLE MOONG DAL- High Antioxidant level in moong dal May ReduceChronic Disease Risk. It helps in lowering LDL Cholesterol Levels, Reducing Heart Disease Risk. Being rich in Potassium, Magnesium and Fiber it help in reduced Blood Pressure. Being rich in fibre it helps in improved digestive health. The most important fact for me is, it promotes weight loss by suppressing hunger and raising fullness hormones. Folate in moong beans can support a healthy pregnancy too and many more.

WOOD APPLE- It is very much helpful in improved digestion. It helps in blood purification. Helps in the treatment of stomach issues.



For khichdi-

  • ½ cup brown basmati rice(soaked for 15 minutes)
  • ¼ cup whole moong dal (soaked overnight and parboiled with salt)
  • 1tbsp dried cranberries (soaked)
  • 1inch cinnamon stick
  • 2 cloves
  • 2-3 black peppercorns
  • 2-3 almonds
  • 1tbsp finely chopped ginger and green chillies
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 1tsp turmeric powder
  • 1 dried red chilly
  • 1tsp whole cumin
  • 1tbsp ghee
  • Salt to taste
  • 1 ¼ cup water

For wood apple chutney-

  • Pulp of one ripe wood apple (strained)
  • 1 green chilly
  • 1tsp freshly roasted and crushed cumin powder
  • 2 cloves of garlic
  • Salt to taste
  • 1tsp sugar


For cranberry Khichdi-

  • Take the ghee in a deep heavy bottom nonstick pan and heat it on medium to high flame.
  • Add the whole spices to it. (cumin, cinnamon, black peppercorn, bay leaf, clove, dried red chilly).
  • put the finely chopped ginger and green chilly into the pan.
  • Put the turmeric powder into it.
  • Sauté nicely till fragrant.
  • Put the rice to it and sauté for 2 minutes on low flame.
  • Put the moong dal in. Mix well.
  • In goes the water followed by the almonds and cranberries.
  • Put salt as per the taste.
  • Bring it to boil. Then cover it and cook till the rice is nicely done.
  • Serve hot.

For wood apple chutney-

  • In a bowl take the green chilly and garlic.
  • Crush both of them nicely with salt (as per taste)
  • Put the sugar in followed by the wood apple pulp.
  • Put the roasted cumin powder and mix well.
